Are there pirates?

Legend of Topsail Island, North Carolina

According to local legend, Topsail got its name centuries ago when pirates hid their boats in the channel between the island and the mainland. Only the top of the boats’ sails was visible to ships approaching from the Atlantic. Rumor has it that Blackbeard’s treasure is still buried somewhere on the island

From 1630 to 1720 pirates plundered merchant ships traveling up and down the Atlantic. This exhibit features 10 notorious pirates, including the infamous Blackbeard. It is said that Blackbeard launched some of his attacks from the shallow inlets of Topsail Island, and legend has it that Topsail Island was named by merchant captains who learned to spot the highest masts, or Tops’ls, of the pirate ships in order to outrun the looters.
